NASCAR & Legal
For this Allstate NASCAR Sponsorship Launch print ad To announce Allstate’s new NASCAR sponsorship and partnership with driver Kasey Kahne, we leaned into the tension between high-speed racing and the brand’s safety-first reputation. This long-copy ad ran in the NASCAR souvenir guide and humorously addressed every legal and brand concern—by writing one big tongue-in-cheek disclaimer. The message, printed across the racetrack finish line, blended fan enthusiasm with corporate caution in a way only Allstate could.
The copy:
Allstate loves racing, but our lawyers would only let us sponsor it if we include this disclaimer:
Allstate is proud to be a sponsor of NASCAR. However, that doesn’t mean we want you to go out and drive 200 miles per hour, or trade paint with the guy next to you because he cut you off. It’s also not good practice to draft on the expressway, no matter how late for work you are. So what we’re saying is that you should leave the racing to the professionals, and by professionals, we don’t mean doctors, carpenters or experts in other fields. We mean people like Kasey Kahne. Other experts we aren’t talking about include dentists, firemen, pediatricians, electricians, plumbers, nurses, architects, veterinarians, surgeons, college professors, mathematicians, nuclear physicists, rocket scientists, paleontologists, roofers, engineers, chemistry teachers, extreme athletes, artists, pilots or graphic designers. A lot of people ask us why we decided to sponsor NASCAR in the first place. The cars do go pretty fast, after all, and we’re an insurance company. What’s the connection? Is there one? We sure think so. In fact, it’s pretty obvious when you really sit down and think about it, like many of us do on a daily basis: we’ve always supported good driving. That’s what we do. That’s what we believe insurance is all about, actually. And NASCAR features some of the best driving in the world. “Wait,” you might be thinking, “safe driving? These guys are going so fast!” True, but these guys are safe, too. You wouldn’t know it from the high speeds and all the burned rubber, but NASCAR is constantly trying to figure out ways to make the races as safe as possible. Restrictor plates are an obvious example of this dedication to safety. On an interesting note, the automobile industry owes a lot of technical advancements to the research and testing done by NASCAR teams. Everything from improved brake systems to roll cages for convertibles have been impacted by the tireless efforts of racing professionals. That means their work has made your car safer to drive. Isn’t that something? Allstate is proud to support those efforts. You may also be wondering what a sponsorship like this entails. Short answer? A lot. Long answer? It’s not just about putting an Allstate patch on Kasey Kahne’s fire suit, or using him in a couple of our commercials (although we did have a great time working with such a talented, interesting guy). Our sponsorship is also about raising awareness for the things Allstate is doing to improve the roads for everyone. By encouraging safe driving, Allstate is giving America incentives to make the world a better place to drive for all of us. And you can’t really put a value on that, can you? We don’t think you can, and we think you’ll probably agree. Another important fact you may or may not realize is that this print ad was developed exclusively for the NASCAR souvenir guide. What can we say about the souvenir guide? It’s a great publication, and we’re proud that our partnership with NASCAR affords us the opportunity to be part of your race day experience. By the way, have we mentioned how glad we are that you made it to the race safe and sound? That’s really the most important thing. Because while it’s fun to watch cars exceeding speeds of 200 miles per hour, it’s also a good idea to drive home safely after the race. In fact, if you insure your car with Allstate, you might even be able to save up to 20% off your insurance bill just for being a good driver with a clean driving record. It’s a little something Allstate calls “encouragement.” But back to the 200 miles per hour, for a second. Have you ever noticed how loud those cars are? Wow! It’s like standing behind an airplane as it takes off. Good thing we all have earplugs, those little devices NASCAR fans use to deaden some of the sound from the car engines. Another race thing we love is the smell of burned rubber. Don’t you love that? There’s just no replacement for a nice whiff of burned rubber on a Saturday morning, is there? It’s one of those uniquely NASCAR things we’re proud to be a part of now that we have this new sponsorship we told you about. So what does the future hold for NASCAR and Allstate? Could be a lot of things. We obviously plan to continue talking about the ways we hope to help NASCAR fans insure their safety, and the safety of their cars. Again, that’s what insurance is all about. Sure, we get the occasional perk of being able to attend the races, but hey, we’re fans, too. We were rooting for Kasey all last year, and we look forward to him taking a few more checkered flags next year, maybe in the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. Boy, that would be pretty sweet. Our driver winning our race, which is held at the best track in the world. Yep. It would make us so happy if that happened. Although, to be honest, what makes us really happy is when a race finishes without a single crash. Races like that are a testament to the level of skill involved, and the caliber of today’s NASCAR drivers. This sport has come a long way since the days of leather helmets, and the future is even brighter. Finally, we should probably mention that our sponsorship of NASCAR is, most of all, about the fans. The real reason we’re doing all this is to connect with you—and show you why Allstate is the best possible insurance company to take care of you in this crazy world. Because you deserve great coverage. You deserve affordable rates, too. In short, every NASCAR fan reading this deserves to be in Good Hands. And if you’ve actually read this far, maybe you’d be just as interested in checking out our website (allstate.com) or calling a local Allstate agent for a quote. And of course there’s always 1-800-ALLSTATE. Thanks for reading, go Kasey, and go NASCAR!
